Nineteen Fifty-Six is looking for our next staff of editors to work on our 2025-2026 more students team. Here’s some information about the editor positions we have open:
Paid positions*
Managing Editor*:
The managing editor works alongside the Editor-in-Chief to manage the publication while helping create and maintain an adequate editorial staff. The managing editor oversees hiring and recruitment efforts and manages production workflows to ensure operations run efficiently and on deadline. The managing editor will collect demographics and keep contacts for models. The managing editor should be a critical thinker, creative problem solver, and exceptional communicator interested in system operations, organization, and optimization to improve the publication.

Co-Creative Director*:
The creative directors maintain and update the overall aesthetic of Nineteen Fifty-Six across its various mediums with a specific focus on print. The creative directors are the lead layout designer of both magazine issues and must be available for the two weeks of print production during the Fall and Spring semesters. The directors will recruit, train, and lead a team of layout designers to create pages for the publications and ensure consistent, bold, and high-quality design that tells a story and catches readers’ eye. They will heavily collaborate with the photo and design editors to help bring the magazine to life and should be proactive and apt communicators. The creative directors should have an eye for editorial design standards and be knowledgeable of Adobe programs, such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.

- Oversee a team of layout designers, ensuring there is adequate designer presence during all production days.
- Work with editors to ensure that every issue is filled with informational graphics, excellent photography, and artwork.
- Maintain design consistency from issue-to-issue while being bold in your design.
- Work with the writing editor, the photo editor and multimedia editor to develop innovative and creative ways to tell longform stories.

Writing Editor*:
The writing editor oversees pitching, sourcing, and editing for print and online content. Like the creative director, working alongside the editor-in-chief, the writing editor maintains and updates the editorial style of Nineteen Fifty-Six. The writing editor should have an excellent grasp of AP style, grammar, and ethics. The writing editor should be up to date with current events locally and nationally, as well as pop culture and what’s happening on campus. They will recruit, train, and guide a well-rounded team of contributors and are responsible for facilitating a weekly meeting with them. The writing editor will also assist with Nineteen Fifty-Six magazine’s new monthly newsletter.

Photo Editor*:
The photo editor recruits, trains, and manages a team of photographers who will take all the pictures for print and online stories. The editor will collaborate heavily with the creative director, graphic design editor and a troupe of models to create engaging photography. The photo editor is also responsible for assigning photo shoots to contributing photographers and creating interesting photo stories for the publication. The editor should feel comfortable taking pictures, editing them via Adobe Photoshop, and leading a team.

- If necessary, create a registry of models that are reliable and willing to be on the team

Engagement Editor*:
The engagement editor runs and increases Nineteen Fifty-Six’s social media accounts, including Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, etc. The engagement editor will create a monthly calendar for posts and recruit, train and lead a team of social media strategists to help make those posts. The engagement editor should be a great communicator and collaborator interested in helping Nineteen Fifty-Six magazine’s content reach a larger audience. They should be comfortable writing copy for social media and have some experience with applications like Buffer.

PR Manager*:
The PR manager is responsible for creating all of Nineteen Fifty-Six’s on-campus events, including the launch party and helping connect the publication with the UA community. The PR manager will be responsible for working with the editor-in-chief and managing editor to find a location for, advertise and host a monthly listening session for students of color in the UA community to come and discuss the issues they’re facing on campus. The engagement editor will also collaborate with the Office of Student Media’s ad sales team to commission ads from and foster bonds with local Black-owned businesses in the Tuscaloosa community. The PR manager should be interested in fostering community and have an interest in public relations, marketing, or advertising. They are organized, strategic and innovative when it comes to creating events.

Multimedia Editor:
The multimedia editor is dedicated to all things audio-visual, specifically focusing on creating content for Nineteen Fifty-Six’s YouTube channel. The editor works alongside the engagement editor to create exciting content that takes what’s been published in the magazine to the next level. They should be comfortable editing media content and will recruit, train, and lead a team of videographers. Along with multimedia content, the multimedia editor will work with the writing editor to upload online content to the magazine’s website.
